|The story of the Runbird
Mizuno was originated in 1906. The search for a new logo which lead to the creation of the Runbird was established in 1980. Up until this point Mizuno had used an ‘M’ as its logo and it was decided that this needed to be replaced with something more creative. More than 180 different suggestions were rejected in the search for a suitably appropriate logo. The Runbird was designed as an expressive representation of the geometric harmony of three orbiting planets. The long flowing elliptical curves of the Runbird represent the vast energy and expansiveness of planets moving amongst the universe. These three trajectories brought together exemplify Mizuno’s approach to sport which is to be both boundless and free flowing. Sport can be energetic, sleek and graceful and this is how the Runbird logo has developed over the years into its current aesthetic form.
| How the Runbird got its name
When the design was shown to former chairman Masato Mizuno he immediately branded it the Runbird. His initial thought was that the design of the logo looked like a ‘roadrunner’ which gave birth to its nickname and later its official name - The Runbird. It has since come to represent the two components that make up its name, ’Run’, which is synonymous with sport, health and exercise and is familiar to all types of athlete, no matter the game they play. The ‘bird’, which is emblematic of the Japanese concept of free spirit, able to fly where it pleases without limitations. Today the lines of the Runbird are a figurative representation of a ‘sense of speed and feeling of strength’ and encourages people to approach sport with a sense of freedom and willingness to play anywhere.

How the Runbird has changed
Over the years the logo has remained the same without deviating too much from the geometric lines of the orbiting planets. However there have been several subtle tweaks to make the logo look more streamlined and to give it a more dynamic feel in keeping with Mizuno’s own developing sentiment towards sport. Certain curves on the logo have been accentuated to be more indicative of the elliptical nature of orbiting planets and the previously straight line that creates the top of the head of the Runbird has been curved also. All these minute changes alter the perception of the logo and bring the design firmly in line with Mizuno’s forward thinking design strategy. It is this modernday speedy, visual logo which has been praised for having a clean and striking appeal. It has become more than just a corporate logo, it signifies the pursuit of fitness and activities of athletes from around the world.
